El Romanticismo

Con el fin de la nobleza y la aparición de la burguesia como clase dominante aparecen nuevas corrientes libertarias. Con ellas aparece un nuevo movimiento cultural, sobre todo en la literatura, que es el Romanticismo. El romanticismo supuso una revolución tan grande que aún hoy día siguen vigentes muchas de las ideas que se plantearon en esa época: el individuo centro de la sociedad, aparición de las clases sociales, los derechos de la persona, la democracia como forma de gobierno…

El romántico vuelve a recrearse en la edad media. Se buscan nuevos ideales que se traducen en literatura en un resurgimiento de la novela, y en concreto de la novela histórica que se recra en el Medievo. Una novela en la que se mezclan los personajes históricos reales con personajes ficticios. El ejemplo más palpable es Ivanhoe de Sir Walter Scott. Este paradigma resucita la novela, que había dejado de existir durante el periodo ilustrado. El autor romántico se siente liberado de todas las ataduras que se generó con la didáctica ilustrada. La obra ya no debe enseñar, sino que debe ser para entretener, para visitar esos mundos fuera de la razón. Lo fantástico ya no repugna.

El romántico tiene una visión trágica del mundo, se siente incomprendido y busca escapar. Esta huida se traduce en dos formas: Los viajes en busca de aventuras (Lord Byron a Grecia) o, en segundo lugar, el suicidio. A causa de la primera aparece en sus obras el exotismo.

En España el romanticismo llega más tarde. Durante el periodo napoleónico España se ha visto envuelta en la guerra de la Independencia (1808 – 1812). A su término aparece la figura de Fernando VII, que pasó de ser el rey más deseado a ser el más odiado. A su llegada anuló cualquier intento de instauración de una democracia, con la supresión de la Constitución de 1812 y la persecución de todo movimiento liberal.

El periodismo a tomado más fuerza que en la ilustración, y aparece el autor cumbre de la literatura romántica española: Mariano José de Larra. En sus artículos retrata de una manera crítica y mordaz a la sociedad que le rodea. Su vida estuvo imporegnada del espíritu romántico, hasta el punto de que su trágica muerte fue causada por el suicidio.

José de Espronceda es otro de los grandes románticos. En sus poemas aparecen los grandes temas del romanticismo, aunque el más conocido poema es la Canción del Pirata. El pirata es el símbolo de la libertad. Es un marginado idealista que vive en su barco. No tiene patria y va en busca de aventuras. Encaja perfectamente en el espíritu romántico.

Posteriormente aparecen dos de las grandes figuras del romanticismo español: Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer y Rosalía de Castro.
El primero de ellos famoso por las Rimas y Leyendas, obras cumbres de la literatura romántica. Sus rimas innovan la métrica, están llenas de ritmo y musicalidad. Son poemas que hablan del amor y de la creación poética. Las leyendas son pequeños textos en prosa en los que transmite leyendas populares recreadas por él. La segunda es escritora en lengua gallega. Sus obras líricas alcanzan cimas insuperables en la literatura femenina del siglo XIX.

Reaparece también en España la novela en su paradigma histórico. Como ejemplo tenemos El Señor de Bembibre de Enrique Gil y Carrasco. En ella se recrea la historia de los caballeros templarios en la zona del Bierzo. La novela histórica crea hechos fantásticos a partir de un hecho histórico real. Mezcla personajes reales históricos con personajes imaginarios en un afán de reconstruir e interpretar la historia. No busca enseñar sino deducir la realidad presente desde los hechos pasados. Este paradigma se ha mantenido vigente hasta nuestros días a pesar de que a finales del siglo XIX con el realismo perdió importancia.
