Nos campos começaram a escassear os animais. Nos rios e nas lagoas, dificilmente se via a mancha prateada de um peixe. Nas matas já não havia frutas, nem por lá apareciam caças de grande porte: onças, capivaras, antas, veados ou tamanduás. No ar do entardecer, já não se ouvia o chamado dos macucos e dos jacus, pois as fruteiras tinham secado.

Os índios, que ainda não plantavam roças, estavam atravessando um período de penúria. Nas tabas tinha desaparecido a alegria, causada pela abastança de outros tempos. Suas ocas não eram menos tristes. Os velhos, desconsolados, passavam o dia dormindo na esteira, à espera de que Tupã lhes mandasse um porungo de mel. As mulheres formavam roda no terreiro e lamentavam a pobreza em que viviam. Os curumins cochilavam por ali, tristinhos, de barriga vazia. E os varões da tribo, não sabendo mais o que fazer, trocavam pernas pelas matas, onde já não armavam mais laços, mundéus e outras armadilhas. Armá-los para quê? Nos carreiros de caça, o tempo havia desmanchado os rastos, pois eles datavam de outras luas, de outros tempos mais felizes.

E o sofrimento foi tal que, certa vez, numa clareira do bosque, dois índios amigos, da tribo dos guaranis, resolveram recorrer ao poder de Nhandeyara, o grande espírito. Eles bem sabiam que o atendimento do seu pedido estava condicionado a um sacrifício. Mas que fazer? Preferiram arcar com tremendas responsabilidades a verem a sua tribo e seus parentes morrerem de inanição, a míngua de recursos.

Tomaram essa resolução e, a fim de esperar o que desejavam, se estenderam na relva esturricada. Veio a noite. Tudo caiu num pesado silêncio, pois já não havia vozes de seres vivos. De repente, a dois passos de distância, surgiu-lhe pela frente um enviado de Nhandeyara.

– Que desejais do grande espírito? – Perguntou.

– Pedimos nova espécie de alimento, para nutrir a nós mesmos e a nossas famílias, pois a caça, a pesca e as frutas parecem ter desaparecido da terra.

– Está bem – respondeu o emissário. Nhandeyara está disposto a atender ao vosso pedido. Mas para isso, deveis lutar comigo, até que o mais fraco perca a vida.

Os dois índios aceitaram o ajuste e se atiraram ao emissário do grande espírito. Durante algum tempo só se ouviu o arquejar dos lutadores, o baque dos corpos atirados ao chão, o crepitar da areia solta atirada sobre as ervas próximas. Dali a pouco, o mais fraco dos dois ergueu os braços, apertou a cabeça entre as mãos e rolou na clareira…

Estava morto. O amigo penalizado, enterrou-o nas proximidades do local.

Na primavera seguinte, como por encanto, na sepultura de Auaty (assim se chamava o índio) brotou um linda planta de grandes folhas verdes e douradas espigas. Em homenagem a esse índio sacrificado em benefício da tribo, os guaranis deram o nome de auaty, ao milho, seu novo alimento.
