Archaeopteryx significa “asa antiga” é um pássaro pré-histórico, que data de cerca de 150 milhões de anos atrás, durante o período Jurássico, quando muitos dinossauros viveram.

É uma das mais antigas aves conhecidas.

Archaeopteryx parecia ser parte pássaro e parte dinossauro.

Ao contrário de aves modernas, tinha dentes, três garras em cada asa, um esterno plano (esterno), costelas barriga (gastralia), e uma cauda longa e óssea.

Como as aves modernas, tinha penas, um corpo levemente construído com ossos ocos, uma fúrcula e dedos reduzidos.

Este animal de tamanho de um corvo pode ter sido capaz de voar, mas não muito longe e não muito bem.

O Archaeopteryx é a ave mais antiga que se conhece, conviveu com os dinossauros do período Jurássico e talvez ainda seria considerado como um dinossauro se não fosse o fato de suas penas terem se fossilizado.

Um dos primeiros esqueletos de Archaeopteryx encontrados foi atribuído a um compsognathus.

O Archaeopteryx tinha dentes e possuía ossos na cauda como um pequeno dinossauro, nas asas ainda possuía três dedos, que serviriam para agarrar os galhos das árvores e auxiliar na subida das mesmas.

A questão questão que gera dúvidas é o fato de o Archaeopteryx não possuir o esterno (robusto osso provido de uma quilha que as aves tem no peito, onde se inserem poderosos músculos que permitem o bater de asas para o vôo ), no entanto o Archaeopteryx possuía o chamado ” osso da sorte ” ou ” forquilha ” típico das aves.

Não se sabe ao certo se o Archaeopteryx poderia levantar vôo e voar como as aves, mas sem dúvida ” voava ” de galhos em galhos, dava saltos enormes impulsionados pelas asas (como as galinhas o fazem atualmente) e planava caçando insetos nas matas do Jurássico.
