Este grande saurópode foi descoberto em 1965 no deserto de Gobi.

Opisthocoelicaudia skarzynskii tinha cerca de 12 m de comprimento (39 pés).

Foi um saurópode descoberto em 1965 na Bacia de Nemegt do deserto de Gobi da Mongólia por cientistas de uma das numerosas expedições Paleontológicos polonês-mongol. O esqueleto estava faltando o crânio e vértebras do pescoço.

Seu nome, opisthocoelicaudia, é derivado das palavras gregas e latinas, e essencialmente significa “oco por trás tail”.

Este refere-se ao tipo das vértebras, na parte da frente da cauda, onde a extremidade posterior (virada para trás) da vértebra é côncava em forma e a extremidade anterior (virado para a frente) é convexa.

Opisthocoelicaudia skarzynskii é a única espécie da género.

Apesar do seu enorme peso, que é estimada em cerca de 30 toneladas.

Opisthocoelicaudia podia ter usado a sua cauda como um suporte, permitindo assim a traseira em uma postura bípede para navegar no alto das copas das árvores.

Como a maioria dos saurópodes, provavelmente era necessário até centenas de quilos de forragem para uma base diária, para satisfazer as suas necessidades nutricionais.

O Opisthocoelicaudia

O Opisthocoelicaudia cujo o nome significa ” ossos ocos na parte de trás da cauda “, viveu na Mongólia durante o período Cretáceo.

Era um dinossauro saurópode de porte médio, chegando a 12 metros de comprimento e 6 de altura, que para alcançar as copas das árvores apoiava-se nas pernas de traseiras e usava a cauda como apoio.

Fósseis encontrados no deserto de Góbi, na Mongólia, havia marcas de dentes na perna fossilizada e faltava a cabeça do Opisthocoelicaudia, provavelmente algum predador mordeu a perna do Opisthocoelicaudia e esperou ele cair para depois devorá-los e talvez levar a cabeça embora…, ou então um carnívoro o encontrou morto e o comeu, só podemos deduzir algo assim, mas ter certeza do que realmente ocorreu provavelmente nunca teremos.
