O que é estoicismo?

O estoicismo é uma doutrina ética helenística que propunha a resistência humana ante o sofrimento existencial. Foi fundada por Zenão de Cítio (340 – 264 a.C.), cujo expoente máximo foi Crísipo de Sólis. Em sua vertente romana cumpre ainda citar os nomes: Sêneca, Epicteto e Marco Aurélio. Para esse texto, temos como objetivo compreender a reflexão filosófica estoica da Antiguidade Tardia, por este motivo centraremos nossa atenção no neoestoicismo romano.

Dentre as características que marcaram o neoestoicismo romano, de acordo com Reale e Antiseri, cumpre citar:

– Interesse centrado na problemática ética, em alguns casos tornou-se o problema exclusivo;

– Redução considerável, chegando à quase anulação, dos interesses pela Lógica e Física se comparado as vertentes anteriores e demais doutrinas da antiguidade;

– Busca intimista de uma perfeição da consciência individual;

– Certa influência do platonismo em alguns de seus autores.

Sêneca

Lúcio Aneu Sêneca transitou com maestria entre os gêneros literário e filosófico, daí ser largamente estudado no campo das ciências humanas e linguagem.Aproximando-se muito da doutrina do justo-meio aristotélica, o filósofo pensa a sua ética a partir da preponderância da moderação sobre o excesso. Nesse sentido, uma vida virtuosa pressuporia uma relação harmônica dos seres humanos com a natureza e a abstinência dos bens materiais.

Outra ideia interessante de Sêneca é a forma como ele trata a morte, mostrando-nos que o aprender a morrer é já em sua essência um aprender a viver. Em outras palavras, o homem é um animal que caminha inevitavelmente em direção à morte. E a consciência desse trajeto deve modificar a sua relação com a morte passando a encará-la como um alívio diante da impotência existencial a ponto de o indivíduo caminhar sem medo algum em direção à sua morte.

Epicteto

Semelhante à Sócrates, Epicteto não deixou escritos o que nos impõe dificuldade semelhante em termos filosóficos e históricos para se falar algo com absoluta exatidão acerca de seu pensamento. Em sua reflexão acerca da ética, partindo da dialética socrática, Sêneca propõe uma ética vinculada à vida prática das pessoas, que efetivamente transforme suas vidas, distanciando-se, portanto, das éticas idealistas que se resumem em teorizar o agir humano distante da práxis.

Marco Aurélio

Pautando-se numa visão pessimista da realidade, Marco Aurélio entende a humanidade como uma plateia passiva diante do seu próprio aniquilamento existencial, daí a necessidade de se voltar para seu próprio interior na busca de amenizar a fatal destruição para a qual caminhamos inevitavelmente em direção.
