O que foi a Corrida Armamentista

A Corrida Armamentista foi uma das principais características da Guerra Fria (1945-1991). Entre as décadas de 1940” e   1980”, o mundo assistiu horrorizado o acúmulo de armas entre Estados Unidos da América e União Soviética, que buscavam através do aumento do arsenal bélico, manter seu poder sobre os países nos quais exerciam influência econômica, política e, obviamente, militar.

Gradativamente, ambos os lados passaram a gastar somas vultuosas de dinheiro na aquisição de armamentos dos mais divisos, à espera de um possível conflito direto entre ambos – o que nunca viria a acontecer de fato. Eram centenas de soldados, tanques, caças e submarinos prontos para, a qualquer momento, iniciarem ataques ao inimigo.

Sem dúvida nenhuma, o grande momento desse conflito se deu no âmbito das armas nucleares. Foram os norte-americanos os primeiros a dominarem o uso de armas atômicas, bem como a utilizá-las nos ataques ao Japão no final da Segunda Guerra Mundial, em 1945, ao atacar Hiroshima e Nagasaki. Apenas quatro anos depois de o mundo conhecer o poder de destruição das bombas nucleares (ou seja, em 1949) o líder soviético Joseph Stálin anunciou ao mundo a criação de armas deste mesmo tipo pela URSS. Foram então criadas alianças militares por ambos os lados: a Otan (1949) na parte ocidental, liderada pelos E.U.A. e o Pacto de Varsóvia (1955), na parte oriental,  liderada pela U.R.S.S.

Seria o início de uma tensão que se agravaria em 1962 com a Crise dos Mísseis de Cuba ou Crise de Outubro.  Neste momento, o primeiro ministro soviético, Nikita Kruschev, arquitetou a instalação de mísseis com capacidade nuclear na ilha caribenha de Cuba, cujo alcance seria  de aproximadamente 145 quilômetros do litoral norte-americano. O início da crise se deu graças a eventos ocorridos no ano antes, quando a Inglaterra e a Itália instalaram mísseis na Turquia e os E.UA. tentaram retomar sua influência em Cuba na malfadada Invasão da Baia dos Porcos.

Após o agravamento da ameaça de uma guerra nuclear, ambos os blocos buscaram diminuir a tensão nuclear. Apenas nos momentos finais da Guerra Fria, já na década de 1980 nos governos de Ronald Reagan, houve a promoção de uma nova corrida armamentista, baseada em caças indetectáveis por radares inimigos, novos equipamentos militares e armas nucleares e o projeto Guerra Nas Estrelas (que consistia em criar escudos espaciais que impedissem qualquer ataque nuclear por parte dos soviético). A pretensão duraria pouco. Menos de uma década depois, em 1989, cairia o Muro de Berlim e chegaria ao fim a corrida armamentista mais perigosa da história da humanidade.
