Pelo fato de ter dimensões continentais, o território que hoje chamamos de Brasil possui aproximadamente 8 milhões de km². Essa grande extensão se tornou ao longo da história uma barreira para sua delimitação política e administrativa, principalmente no que se refere ao início de sua colonização a partir de 1500, gerando muitos conflitos entre duas grandes potências mercantilistas da época, Portugal e Espanha.

A primeira delimitação no âmbito político, cartográfico e administrativo se deu com o Tratado de Tordesilhas em 1494, dividindo parte do território para Portugal e parte para a Espanha. Esse processo reverbera um caráter muito importante, uma vez que foi base para os demais que surgiriam nos anos posteriores, como as Capitanias Hereditárias de 1534, que consiste numa divisão que buscava o controle do território contra invasões, colocando em grandes faixas de terras latitudinais os donatários portugueses para que promovessem o crescimento, a prosperidade a defesa de sua capitania.

Em um salto na história, já com quase todos os estados brasileiros constitucionalizados em lei, as divisões passaram a levar em consideração as características naturais e sociais de cada um, procurando correlações suas correlações para assim construir um aspecto regional, onde diversos estados partilhavam de características semelhantes na economia, na diversidade cultural, nos aspectos da sociedade, no meio físico-natural, etc.

Em 1913, tem-se uma divisão regional voltada para o ensino de Geografia, na qual considerava-se apenas algumas características físicas da paisagem, a exemplo da morfologia do relevo, da vegetação e dos aspectos climáticos. Desta forma, surge a região Setentrional, a região Norte, a região Oriental e a região Meridional.

Com o desenvolvimento do Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística, por volta da década de 1940, o IBGE delimitou as seguintes regiões a partir dos aspectos naturais e sociais do território brasileiro: A região Centro, composta por Goiás, Mato Grosso e Goiás. A região Leste, composta por Sergipe, Bahia e Espírito Santo. A região Norte, composta pelo Piauí, Acre, Maranhão, Pará e Amazonas. A região Nordeste, composta pelo Rio Grande do Norte, Pernambuco, Paraíba, Ceará, Alagoas. A região Sul, composta por São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Paraná, Santa Catarina e Rio Grande do Sul.

Entre 1945 e 1950, novas divisões regionais foram surgindo, sobretudo através do acréscimo de mais estados que se constitucionalizaram-se ao longo desses anos.

No entanto, uma das divisões mais importantes, que inclusive se assemelha com a atual divisão, é a de 1970, onde o Mato Grosso é dividido em duas partes, originando o Mato Grosso do Sul, que juntos a Goiás, configurariam a região Centro-Oeste. A região Nordeste recebe a Bahia e Sergipe e é criada a região Sudeste, que inclui Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo e Espírito Santo. Portanto, o Brasil possuindo as exatas 5 regiões: O Norte, Nordeste, Centro-Oeste, Sudeste e Sul. Essa divisão regional foi alterada na década de 90, principalmente devido a Constituição de 1988, onde tem-se o surgimento de novos estados brasileiros e a reconfiguração de áreas anexadas.
