O que é Ectotermia?

Ectotermos, qualquer animal chamado de sangue frio; isto é, qualquer animal cuja regulação da temperatura do corpo dependa de fontes externas, como a luz solar ou uma superfície de rocha aquecida.

Os animais ectotérmicos incluem os peixes, anfíbios, répteis e invertebrados.

As temperaturas corporais dos ectotérmicos aquáticos são geralmente muito próximas às da água.

Os ectotérmicos não requerem tanta comida quanto os animais de sangue quente (endotérmicos) do mesmo tamanho, mas a maioria não consegue lidar tão bem com os ambientes frios.

Ectotermos – Biologia

Um ectotérmico cujas fontes fisiológicas internas de calor são de importância relativamente pequena ou muito insignificante no controle da temperatura corporal.

Tais organismos (por exemplo, rãs) dependem de fontes de calor ambientais, que lhes permitem operar com taxas metabólicas muito econômicas.

Em contraste, em lugares onde a temperatura varia tão amplamente a ponto de limitar as atividades fisiológicas de outros tipos de ectotérmicos, muitas espécies procuram habitualmente fontes externas de calor ou abrigo do calor; por exemplo, muitos répteis regulam a temperatura corporal sob o sol, ou procuram sombra quando necessário, além de toda uma série de outros mecanismos de termorregulação comportamental.

Em contraste com os ectotérmicos, os endotérmicos dependem em grande parte, até predominantemente, do calor dos processos metabólicos internos, e os mesotérmicos usam uma estratégia intermediária.

Nos ectotérmicos, a temperatura ambiente flutuante pode afetar a temperatura do corpo.

Essa variação na temperatura corporal é chamada poiquilotérmicos, embora o conceito não seja amplamente satisfatório e o uso do termo esteja diminuindo.

Em pequenas criaturas aquáticas como Rotifera, os poiquilodermia é praticamente absoluta, mas outras criaturas (como caranguejos) têm opções fisiológicas mais amplas à sua disposição, e podem mover-se para temperaturas preferidas, evitar mudanças de temperatura ambiente ou moderar seus efeitos.

Ectotérmicos também podem exibir as características da homeotermia, especialmente dentro de organismos aquáticos. Normalmente, sua faixa de temperaturas ambientais é relativamente constante, e há poucas em número que tentam manter uma temperatura interna mais alta devido aos altos custos associados.
